That God song “Put Your Hand in the Hand” was embraced by a large number of people this popularity really served to deliver Gods message to a secular audience. There was however unforeseen blowback from fellow Christians. Due to what was perceived to be the “rock star” lifestyle they tried to stop this newly founded Christian music movement. Fortunately the detractors were not victorius. The movement really began to pick up steam.

The poser effect started to take hold in Christian music. There were Christian songs being produced by bands who were lacking in the talent department. The record companies saw this new market and the possibilities; unfortunately there was a lack of talented artists in the genre. To try and capitalize on the popularity record companies released everything they could even if it was lacking. I’m not sure if those bands were interested in actually delivering Christ’s message or it was just the only way someone would let them record an album. Only God and the actual artists know that.

With time Christian music started to see a flood of real talent. Artists that were Christians started to embrace their beliefs. The quality of Christian songs saw a great increase. In 1972 a Christian band called Petra was formed. This band would essentially influence Christian music for years to come. The eighties saw a great increase in popularity for Petra

This popularity carried well into the nineties. More styles of music started being incorporated into Christian music. Christian performers were creating music in just about every style. The genre was finally filled with true talents.

The nineties were time of great growth for Christian music. Bands like DC Talk bridged a gap between grunge and hip hop. Gangsta rap was also big at the time. Christian rappers like Tbone had an answer for that. Nowadays Christian music is widely accepted. The genre has come a long way over the last few decades. The music was once years behind secular music. That is not the case anymore. There are some Christian musicians who are even setting the trends themselves.

Bands like Jars of Clay often release albums that debut on the charts. Christian songs are regularly featured in films and T.V. The detractors will always be there. Hopefully this will not discourage people from enjoying this fabulous music.
