Ra Ra Riot The Rhumb Line (Barsuk)

BeckGuiltSound: Earnest, pretty and proper indie pop defined by its use of violin and cello and gentle vocals. Sometimes the strings glide, weave and bounce in between jangly guitars and sturdy drums, while other times the strings take the lead and create a more classical, chamber sound.

Heavy Rotation tracks: “Ghost Under Rocks”; “Can You Tell”; “Dying Is Fine”

Medium Rotation tracks: “Run My Mouth”; “Suspended In Gaffa”

Recommended: Fans of Matt Pond PA, Vampire Weekend and Snow Patrol and should find much too like on The Rhumb Line – which has several standout, sweet-melodied hits. Unfortunately, though, the many highlights are bogged down by nearly as many forgettable tracks that feel too precious and dainty. Ra Ra Riot is a promising young band that could stand to be a little rougher around the edges more often.

Grade: B+
